| Welcome to Cushendun Old Church. |
Set just outside the National Trust village
of Cushendun, this beautifully simple red
sandstone church is one of the landmark
buildings in the area. It was built in 1842 for
the new Church of Ireland parish of Cushendun
but by the end of the last century the
congregation had dwindled and in 2003 the church
was deconsecrated.
European
Heritage Open Days:
The Church will be open from 11am -5pm
on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th
September 2009 and will be hosting an

photographs by members of the Fairhead
Camera Club.

In 2006 the Cushendun Building
Preservation Trust was established to try to
save the building and develop its future as a
broad-based community arts centre. The project
got off to a flying start when the Church was
selected to take part in BBC2's Restoration
Village.
Thanks to a terrific effort on the part
of the local community, the church was regional
winner for Northern Ireland which has generated
invaluable publicity and also entitles it to a
project planning grant. |
 |
| Since competing in
Restoration Village a great deal of
background work has been done identify sources
of funding, and to maintain public awareness. Cushendun Old Church is a
lovely building. It has great potential as a
versatile arts venue and could become a focal
point for the community. If you would like to
support the project you can donate on line, join
the mailing list or contact us to get involved. |
